SUMMARY:The Unprecedented Thermoelectric Properties of Nodal Semimetals in
	a Magnetic Field
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Brian Skinner\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and Ohio State University\nHosted by: Julian Ingham\n\nPart of the Condens
ed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nThe thermoelectric effect is a phenomen
on in which a temperature difference applied to a conducting material induc
es a voltage difference. This effect has a range of important applications
\, since it allows one to convert waste heat into useful electric power. In
conventional metals and semiconductors\, however\, the strength of the the
rmoelectric effect faces fundamental limitations. In this talk I consider w
hether these same limitations apply to the three-dimensional nodal semimeta
ls. I show that\, surprisingly\, the electron-hole symmetry of nodal semime
tals allows for a thermopower that grows without bound under the applicatio
n of a strong magnetic field. This nonsaturating thermopower can be underst
ood in terms of quantum Hall-like edge states\, and the corresponding therm
oelectric Hall conductivity achieves a universal plateau value at large mag
netic field. These effects have been observed experimentally\, and they ma
y enable the development of thermoelectric devices with record efficiency.
