SUMMARY:Summer Student Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Janos Adam (CME) & Victoria Kovalchuk (CME)\nHosted b
y: Eric Boyers\n\nPart of the Graduate Student Council Events.\n\nJanos Ada
m (CME)\nEnhancing the sensitivity of Axion Dark Matter search using Dynami
c Nuclear Polarization \n\nCosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPER)
is a laboratory scale experiment looking for axion dark matter\, using nuc
lear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP
) can be used to improve experimental sensitivity. I will present first res
ults from electron paramagnetic resonance experiments on transient light-in
duced paramagnetic centers in ferroelectric material PMN-PT\, and outline t
he prospects for implementing DNP in our axion dark matter search. \n\n\nVi
ctoria Kovalchuk (CME)\nCharacterizing Ultrashort Laser Pulses\n\nWith the
development of ultrashort pulses\, we can generate and detect extremely sho
rt events. In the scientific realm\, the most exciting application of this
technology is to study phenomena in nature that have short time-scales\, su
ch as chemical reactions and short-lived superconductivity at temperatures
above the critical temperature. However\, to utilize these pulses\, it’s
important to be able to measure various characteristics such as the duratio
n of the pulse. In this talk\, we’ll go over some of the methods of doing
	 that.
