SUMMARY:Statistical Physics in Physiology and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Plamen Ivanov\, Boston University\n\nPart of the Biop
hysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: I will present some re
cent attempts to understand physiologic dynamics by adapting concepts and m
ethods from statistical physics. In particular\, I will review recent studi
es of integrated physiologic systems under neural regulation such as cardia
c dynamics\, locomotion and sleep regulation\, where scale-invariant and no
nlinear features emerge as a result of complex multiple-component interacti
ons. I will briefly discuss the potential clinical utility of our findings.
