SUMMARY:DETERMINING THE EJECTION RATE AND ENERGY SPECTRUM OF PROTONS AFTER
	MUONIC CAPTURE ON ALUMINUM
DESCRIPTION:Featuring John Quirk\n\nPart of the Departmental Seminars.\n\nD
issertation Committee: James Miller\, Robert Carey\, Shyam Erramilli\, Mar
tin Schmaltz\, Chris Grant\n\nAbstract:\n\nObservation of neutrinoless muon
-to-electron conversion in the presence of a nucleus would be unambiguous e
vidence of physics Beyond the Standard Model. Two experiments\, COMET at J-
PARC and Mu2e at Fermilab\, will search for this process in the next few ye
ars. These experiments will provide upper-limits on this branching ratio up
to 10\,000 times better than previously published.\nCOMET/Mu2e developed a
joint venture\, the AlCap Experiment\, to measure particle emission spectr
a from muonic interactions in a number of materials. As a major source of d
amage and background hits in COMET/Mu2e detectors\, AlCap measured the char
ged particle and neutron spectra following nuclear capture on the candidate
target materials aluminum and titanium\, as well as in a number of structu
ral and shielding materials capable of producing other backgrounds. Additio
nally\, COMET/Mu2e are exploring schemes for determining the number of muon
stops via AlCap’s measurement of the photon spectra following both atomi
c and nuclear capture. AlCap performed three data-taking campaigns between
2013 and 2015 at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland\, each geared to
wards different measurements\, of photon\, neutron\, and charged particle e
mission due to interactions of muons stopping in materials. During the fina
l campaign\, AlCap collected heavy charged particle data. I will present an
overview of the Mu2e experiment\, and a summary of the experimental setups
and performances during the AlCap campaigns. My preliminary results of the
proton emission spectrum from the most recent campaign will be presented a
nd compared to the results of previous and current parallel analyses\, as w
ell as the impact on Mu2e.
