SUMMARY:ENTANGLEMENT COMPLEXITY OF QUANTUM STATES\, DYNAMICS AND QUANTUM CO
	MPUTATION
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Zhicheng Yang\n\nPart of the PhD Final Oral Exams.\n\
nExamining Committee: Claudio Chamon\, Andrei Ruckenstein\, Anatoli Polkov
	nikov\, Michael El-Batanouny\, So-Young Pi\n\nAbstract:\nQuantum entangleme
nt has become the key notion bridging originally distinct\nelds of research
over the last decade\, namely\, quantum information and computation\,\ncon
densed matter physics\, and quantum gravity. Previous studies on quantum\ne
ntanglement have largely focused on the entanglement entropy\, which quanti
es the\namount of entanglement. However\, a natural question arises: is the
re additional information\nof a quantum state that is not captured by the e
ntanglement entropy alone?\nFor ground states of gapped Hamiltonians\, this
question has been answered in the\narmative. In this dissertation\, I exte
nd this idea to study highly entangled states\ntypically having volume law
entropy\, and demonstrate that there is indeed much\nricher information on
the complexity of a quantum state beyond the entanglement\nentropy.\nIn the
rst part\, I study the entanglement spectrum of highly entangled states\nc
orresponding to highly excited eigenstates of non-integrable Hamiltonians\,
timeevolved\nstates after a quantum quench with Hamiltonians exhibiting di
erent dynamical\nphases\, and random unitary circuits consisting of random
braids of non-Abelian\nanyons. I demonstrate that the entanglement spectrum
is able to capture the degree\nof randomness of a quantum state\, which we
call the entanglement complexity.\n\nIn the context of scrambling\, this q
uanties the degree of randomness produced by\nscrambling beyond entropic di
agnostics.\nOur understanding of quantum entanglement in condensed matter s
ystems and\nhigh energy physics have largely beneted from the eld of quantu
m computation.\nIn the second part of the dissertation\, I present two exam
ples of novel platforms\nfor quantum computation using state-of-the-art exp
erimental technologies. I demonstrate\nhow one can use hybrid quantum-class
ical architecture to solve computational\nproblems based on an optimal vari
ational ansatz of the evolution protocol. I also\npresent a hierarchical ar
chitecture of constructing logical Majorana zero modes which\ncan be used f
or demonstrating non-Abelian braiding statistics experimentally.
