	ies.\n\nThe charge\, spin and orbital degrees of freedom play a crucial rol
	e in determining the remarkable properties of transition metal oxide materi
	als\, but probing these degrees of freedom is often challenging. In this ta
	lk\, I will describe how resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) opens u
	p important new possibilities for measuring these degrees of freedom even i
	n extreme cases such as atomically thin heterostructures and ultra-fast tra
	nsient states. This includes observing precursor charge correlations in cup
	rates [1]\, determining how orbitals are modified within LaNiO3-based heter
	ostructures [2] and characterizing the spin behavior within the transient s
