SUMMARY:Dark Matters: The Search for the Universe's Missing Mass
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Regina Caputo\, University of Maryland\nHosted by: Ke
vin Black\n\nPart of the HEE Seminar Series.\n\nThe era of precision cosmol
ogy revealed that 80% of the matter in the universe is non-luminous\, or da
rk. The nature of dark matter is crucial to our understanding of the struct
ure and evolution of the universe after the big bang. One promising dark ma
tter candidate\, motivated by both particle- and astrophysics\, is the Weak
ly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP). The detection of this elusive parti
cle requires a multi-pronged approach. I will present results from searches
for WIMPs using high-energy gamma-rays from the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Tele
scope. I will also discuss complementary detection techniques and their nec
essity for dark matter discovery. Although no WIMP has yet been found\, I w
ill discuss what is ruled out so far\, current ongoing searches\, and our b
est prospects for finding the source of the universe's missing mass.
