SUMMARY:Joseph Larkin - Combining Nanopores and Nanoantennas
DESCRIPTION:\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exam.\n\nTitle: Combining Nanopo
res and Nanoantennas\n\n Examining Committee: Amit Meller\, Shyam Err
amilli\, Robert Carey\, and AndersSandvik\n\n Abstract: Metal nanoantennas
have been shown to enhance fluorescence of\n molecules in their vicinity.&n
bsp; However\, no techniques have been able to\n bring molecules to the pre
cise locations of highest enhancement.\n Nanopores have the ability to isol
ate DNA molecules from bulk solution to\n one particular point in space.&nb
sp; We propose an experiment to use nanopores\n to bring fluorescently labe
led DNA to the "hot spot" of a nanoantenna for\n highest enhancem
ent. This allows single-molecule measurement of\n fluorescence enhanc
ement for different molecular locations and antenna\n structures. Moreover\
, the antenna-enhanced signal serves to improve\n detection for a variety o
f single-molecule biophysics experiments.
