SUMMARY:Searches for New Physics with Boosted Top Quarks and the CMS Forwar
d Pixel Detector Phase 1 Upgrade Mechanics
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Maral Alyari\, SUNY Buffalo\nHosted by: Kevin Black\n
\nPart of the HEE Seminar Series.\n\nMany "beyond the Standard Model" (BSM)
models introduced to solve the hierarchy problem\ninvolve quantum interact
ions with top quarks to mitigate the increase in mass of the Higgs\nboson.
Hence\, new physics signatures involving the Top quark are good candidates
for this\npuzzle. We search for new physics at the LHC with the CMS detecto
r in the form of a massive\nparticle decaying to a pair of top quarks. For
large masses\, these top quarks will be highly\nboosted\, leading to unique
event topologies with merged top decay products. We utilize jet\nsubstruct
ure and subjet b-tagging techniques to identify these events\, and proceed
to set limits\non the possible cross sections of new physics models. Curren
tly LHC runs at the luminosity of\n34 cm-2s-1. In 2017 the luminosity of th
	e LHC will also be upgraded to 2E34 cm-2s-1\, providing\nphysicists a great
er opportunity to seek answers to some of the particle physics mysteries we
\nhave encountered since the inception of the LHC. A new pixel detector for
the CMS experiment\nis currently under construction\, to be installed duri
ng the extended year end shutdown 2017.\nThe pixel detector\, the core of t
he CMS detector\, was commissioned in 2008 and is so far\nrunning successfu
lly. However the higher instantaneous luminosity will cause unacceptable\nd
ynamic inefficiencies due to buffer overflows. The more complex track patte
rn recognition due\nto higher pileup will require an additional pixel detec
tor layer to maintain good efficiency. The\nPhase 1 pixel detector replacem
ent addresses these shortcomings. To add an additional\ndetector layer with
out adding material required a complete redesign of the mechanical support\
	nand cooling using novel materials.
