SUMMARY:Ultrafast infrared fiber lasers and applications in mid-infrared vi
	brational photothermal imaging
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Michelle Sanders\, BU\nHosted by: Alexander Sushkov\n
	\nPart of the Biophysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\nThulium(Tm)/Ho
lmium(Ho) co-doped fibers have recently moved into the focus of research du
e to a broadband gain emission window around 2µm and attractive applicatio
ns in spectroscopy\, LIDAR\, biomedical treatment and diagnosis. In this ta
lk\, we will outline pathways to achieve low noise\, high repetition rate u
ltrafast lasers in a versatile linear Tm/Ho fiber laser cavity. \nIn the se
cond part of the talk we will focus on a mid-infrared photothermal spectros
copy system that combines a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser with one of
our custom-designed fiber laser. Mid-infrared spectral imaging in the finge
rprint region (at wavelengths ~5μm and longer) can reveal characteristic d
etails about molecular compounds and secondary structure of chemicals and b
	iomolecules. A contact-less\, non-destructive mid-infrared imaging system w
ith high sensitivity and specificity based on vibrational photothermal spec
troscopy will be presented. Scaling of the pump power a nonlinear photother
mal spectroscopy regime promises a novel multi-dimensional characterization
method for materials with enhanced sensitivity with improved spatial resol
ution. Applications of the presented system can range from chemical trace h
azardous material detection\, to identification of neurodegenerative diseas
es based on secondary protein configurations\, remote sensing and process c
	ontrol.
