SUMMARY:Tight-binding models in biology: from photonic structures to neural
	 networks

	ophysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\nAnderson localization has been
	 extensively studied over the last\ndecades\, with the vast majority of ana
	lysis done on Hermitian\nmatrices. Neuroscience\, ecology and other biologi
	cal systems are\nnoteworthy cases where random\, non-Hermitian matrices wil
	l naturally\narise.  The localization properties of these systems are stron
	gly\nrelated to their dynamics. Here\, I will discuss a particular\nnon-Her
	mitian model with spatial structure\, finding surprisingly rich\nbehavior. 
	Time permitting\, I will also show that similar tight-binding\nmodels can s
	hed light on our understanding of natural photonic\nstructures.
