	ogical systems\, phenotypic variations are seen even among geneticallyident
	ical cells in homogeneous environments.  Recent research\nindicates that su
	ch `non-genetic individuality' can be driven by  rare events arising from t
	he intrinsic stochasticity of gene expression. Correspondingly there is a n
	eed to develop analytical approaches for modeling fluctuations and rare eve
	nts in  stochastic gene expression \n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss analyt
	ical approaches developed by mygroup for stochastic models of gene expressi
	on.  By developing a\nmapping to systems analyzed in queueing theory\, we d
	erive\nanalytical results characterizing mRNA and protein distributions for
	\ngeneral kinetic schemes of gene expression. For models with Poisson\narri
	vals of mRNAs\, we develop a novel approach that leads to\nexact analytical
	 results for protein distributions. We combine approaches fromqueueing theo
	ry and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics to   \ncharacterize large devi
	ations in activity fluctuations for\ngeneral models of gene expression with
	 promoter-based regulation.
