SUMMARY:Slave boson mean field theories for quantum dimers
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Garry Goldstein\, Cambridge\n\nPart of the Condensed
Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: We present a slave boson mean fi
eld analysis of the Quantum Dimer Model. We\npresent a generic approach to
produce slave boson formulations of quantum dimer models. We\nstudy mean fi
elds as well as quantum fluctuations beyond them - using a variety of Hubba
rd\nStratonovich transformations. We study dimer models on square\, cubic a
nd triangular lattices\nand we reproduce parts of their phase diagrams (whi
ch were previously known only numerically\nor through partial mappings to t
he transverse field Ising model). We show that the mean field\nsupports sev
eral dimer liquids and solids. Furthermore we show that dimer models are\ne
quivalent to either U(1)xU(1)\, U(1)xZ2 or Z4 gauge theories which may or m
ay not be in the\nconfining phase depending on the parameters of the dimer
model. We show that the projective\nsymmetry group (PSG) classification app
lies to dimer models. In particular we show that the\nAlgebraic PSG for a d
imer model is equivalent to the Algebraic PSG of a bosonic spin liquid with
\nthe same IGG (Invariant Gauge Group). We present a large N limit for thes
e dimer model\n(where the number of dimer species - N - becomes large) and
show that the meanfield analysis\nbecomes exact in this limit. We also pres
ent a large S (semiclassical limit where the number of\ndimers per link bec
omes large) for the dimer models. Preliminary results on the slave boson\nm
ean field for the Kagome and hexagonal lattices is also presented. A slave
boson formulation\nand mean field of the dimer model doped with bosonic hol
es is also presented; large N and\nlarge S extensions are derived. Motivate
d by the high Tc problem we also study the case when\nthere is a mixture of
fermionic and bosonic dimers (with the fermions representing the doped\nho
les and the bosons representing valence bonds between the spins). We find t
hat there are\nfour fermion pockets located at (+/-Pi/2\, +/-Pi/2) with the
total area enclosed by the pockets\nequal to the fermion doping. We find t
hat the dimers are unstable to d-wave superconductivity at\nlow temperature
	s. A slave fermion meanfield is also presented for the square and hexagonal
\nlattice quantum dimer models. Preliminary results on a slave boson formul
ation and analysis of\na related model: quantum spin ice
