SUMMARY:Xuan Gu (Tyler) - Modified Earthquake Olami-Feder-Christensen Model
with Low Noise\, Asperities and Inhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Xuan Gu\n\nPart of the PhD Final Oral Exams.\n\nExami
	ning Committee:\n\nWilliam Klein\, Harvey Gould\, Anatoli Polkovnikov\,Robe
rt Carey\, Rama Bansil\n\n\nAbstract:\n\nAn important class of physical sys
tems is those that are driven dissipated. One such system is the Olami-Fede
r-Christensen (OFC) model which was proposed as a model for earthquake faul
ts. Previous investigations have shown that the OFC model can be described
by equilibrium methods under certain circumstances. This observation has ex
plained several aspects of the OFC model and earthquake faults. However\, t
hese studies were done at a relatively high level of noise and for systems
with a high degree of homogeneity. But real earthquake faults have a very l
ow level of noise and a large degree of inhomogeneity. In this work\, a car
eful study of the noise and its relation to the stress transfer range\, dis
sipation parameter\, and system size is performed. In addition\, a modified
form of the OFC model is studied\, where we added asperities. We carefully
examined the effect of the asperities on various statistical properties of
	 the model.\n\n![Xuan](/resources/event-image/1562/4f211a5_small)
