SUMMARY:Strengthening the Weak Gravity Conjecture
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Ben Heidenreich\, Harvard\n\nPart of the HET Seminar
Series.\n\nThe Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) posits that subextremal charge
d black holes can decay to charged particles\, implying a mild constraint o
n the spectrum of a quantum gravity theory that has interesting phenomenolo
gical consequences. I examine the consistency of the WGC under toroidal com
pactification\, showing that the WGC can be violated in the dimensionally r
educed theory even when it holds in the higher dimensional theory. I propos
e a strengthening of the conjecture inspired by Kaluza-Klein theory which i
s consistent under compactification\, and show that this strong form is sat
isfied in many explicit string theory examples. I comment on possible conne
ctions to the spectrum of charged operators in a CFT\, both in two dimensio
	ns and in higher dimensions.
