SUMMARY:New Emergent Optical Forces in Chiral Plasmonics
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Mohammadhossein Alizadeh\n\nPart of the PhD Final Ora
	l Exams.\n\nExamining Committee: \n\nProfessors Bjoern Reinhard\, Shyam Err
	amilli\, Roberto Paiella\, Kevin Black\, Raj Mohanty\n\nAbstract:\n\nRecent
ly the new concepts of transverse spin angular momentum and Belinfante spin
momentum of evanescent waves have drawn considerable attention. Here\, we
investigate these novel physical properties of electromagnetic fields in th
e context of locally excited surface plasmon polaritons. We demonstrate\, b
oth analytically and numerically\, that locally excited surface plasmon pol
aritons possess transverse spin angular momentum and Belinfante momentum wi
th rich and non-trivial characteristics. We also show that the transverse s
pin angular momentum of locally excited surface plasmon polaritons leads to
the emergence of transverse chiral forces in opposite directions for chira
l objects of different handedness. The magnitude of such a transverse force
is comparable to the optical gradient force and scattering forces. This fi
nding may pave the way for realization of optical separation of chiral biom
	olecules.\n\n![Hossein](/resources/event-image/1521/6a5ae1b_small)
