SUMMARY:Aging Effects on the Statistical and Structural Properties of the F
	ornix of the Brain
DESCRIPTION:Featuring João Ricardo Santos\n\nPart of the Departmental Semi
	nars.\n\nDissertation Committee: H.E. Stanley\, Douglas L. Rosene\, Rama Ba
nsil\, Tulika Bose\, Shyam Erramilli\n\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe fornix of the br
ain is a bundle of axons crucial for memory functions\, as it is the larges
t\npathway linking the hippocampus with distal brain sites [1]. During the
normal aging process\,\nmyelinated axons (or nerve fibers) in the fornix ar
ea of the rhesus monkey brain decrease in\nnumber with age. Myelin degenera
tion also increases with age [2\,3]. Understanding axons at\nthe ultrastruc
tural level is a critical issue for understanding the human connectome.\nIn
this presentation\, we present a new method to identify and quantify diffe
rences in\nmyelinated axons and their surrounding myelin sheath [4]. This m
ethod uses statistical\nphysics tools to characterize properties ranging fr
om morphologic characteristics of individual\nfibers to macroscopic and str
uctural properties of collections of fibers and their spatial\nrelationship
	s. This allows quantification of their differences and improves on traditio
nal\nmeasures\, such as packing density and fiber size.\n\n![Joao](/resourc
