SUMMARY:Quantum Critical Fluctuations Leading to Strange Metals in 2D Metal
	lic Anti-ferromagnets\, Ferromagnets and in the Cuprates
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Chandra Varma\, University of California - Riverside\
	n\nPart of the Biophysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\nModels for me
	tallic anti-ferromagnets map to the dissipative XY model as do\nXY ferromag
	nets\, the superconductor-insulator transition\, and the model for\nloop-cu
	rrent order in Cuprates. The spectral function of the quantum-critical\n\nu
	ctuations for this model in 2D for a range of parameters is determined by\n
	topological defects - instantons and 2D vortices; it is a separable functio
	n of\nspace and time\, with a 1= dependence at criticality. The marginal fe
	rmi-liquid\nproperties for the fermions follow from coupling to such \nuctu
	ations.\nThese \nuctuations are directly measured by inelastic neutron scat
	tering in the\nquantum-critical region of the new Fe- based compounds\, in 
	a 2D ferromagnet\nand in heavy-Fermions\, and deduced in cuprates through a
	nalysis of ARPES.\nARPES also reveals the coupling function of the fermions
	 to the \nuctuations\nso as to give nearly angle-independent normal self-en
	ergy but d-wave pairing\nenergy.
