SUMMARY:Bending Rules in Graphene Kirigami
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Gene Mele\, University of Pennsylvania\n\nPart of the
	 Condensed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nThe three dimensional shapes of
	 graphene sheets produced by nanoscale\ncut-and-join kirigami are studied b
	y combining large-scale atomistic\nmodelling with continuum elastic theory.
	 Lattice segments are\nselectively removed from a flat graphene sheet and t
	he structure is\nallowed to close and reconstruct by relaxing in the third 
	dimension.\nThe surface relaxation is limited by a nonzero bending modulus 
	which\nproduces a smoothly modulated landscape instead of the\nridge-and-pl
	ateau motif found in macroscopic lattice kirigami. The\nresulting surface s
	hapes and their interactions are well described by\na new set of microscopi
	c kirigami rules that resolve the competition\nbetween the bending and stre
	tching energies. Applications to designing\nstructures with strain induced 
	gauge fields will be discussed.
