SUMMARY:Defining an Energy in the Olami-Feder-Christensen Model
DESCRIPTION:Featuring James Silva\n\nPart of the Departmental Seminars.\n\n
Dissertation Committee: William Klein\, Karl Ludwig\, Pankaj Mehta\, Shyams
under Erramilli\, James Miller\n\nAbstract:\nRecently there have been predi
ctions of large 6.7+ magnitude earthquakes in the near future along the Hay
ward fault that runs across Northern California endangering large metropoli
tan areas. The destructive power of earthquakes has motivated research on u
nderstanding earthquake fault systems to mitigate the consequences of large
earthquakes. To begin understanding earthquake models using physics for eq
uilibrium processes work will be presented on defining energies in earthqua
ke models. \nSpecifically two earthquake fault models will be considered. T
he Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) and Rundle-Jackson-Brown (RJB) model will
be connected by defining an energy analog in the OFC model. Both of these m
odels will be introduced and motivated in the context of earthquakes. Lastl
y the consequences\, future work\, and goals of building more realistic ear
thquake fault models through asperities will be introduced.\n\n![James](/re
