	nPart of the Physics Department Colloquia Series.\n\nStrange metals are con
	ducting states of quantum matter without any quasiparticle \nexcitations. T
	he copper-based high temperature superconductors display a strange metal\na
	t temperatures above the critical temperature\, T_c\, for superconductivity
	\, and at \nelectron densities where T_c is maximal.\nI will describe a sol
	vable model of a strange metal whose properties match quantitatively\nwith 
	those of charged black holes. Then I will outline a general framework for c
	omputing \nobservable properties of strange metals\,\ndrawing upon numerous
	 theoretical methods\, including the black hole mapping.\nFinally\, I will 
	describe a recent experiment in graphene\, in which theory is compared \nwi
	th a (slightly less)\nstrange metal.
