SUMMARY:Statistical physics of power grids
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Prof. Antonio Scala\, Institute of Complex Systems\,
CNR\, Italy IMT Alti Studi Lucca\, Italy....... LIMS the London Institute f
or Mathematical Sciences\, UK\nHosted by: H. Eugene Stanley\n\nPart of the
Biophysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\nABSTRACT\n\nPower grids are
increasing in size and interconnections; the analysis of\npast decades powe
r failures yields signatures of emergent phenomena\, like\nerratic behavior
\, power law distributions and abrupt transitions (black\nouts). While a de
tailed analysis of the system helps understanding what\nhappens from a "pos
t mortem" perspective\, there is still a lack of\napproaches for probabilis
tic assessment of the risk. In this talk I will\nexplore some possible appl
ications of statistical physics to a\nstochastic modelling of power grids.
