SUMMARY:MuSun Experiment: Measuring the Rate of Muon Capture on the Deutero
	n
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Xiao Luo\n\nPart of the Departmental Seminars.\n\nDis
sertation Committee: Robert Carey\, James Miller\, John Butler\, Soyoung P
i\, Shyamsunder Erramilli\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe goal of the MuSun experiment
is to measure the rate of muon capture on the\ndeuteron with a precision of
1.5%. This rate will be used to fix the low-energy\nconstant that describ
es the two-nucleon weak axial current in Chiral perturbation\ntheory. It w
ill therefore calibrate evaluations of solar proton-proton fusion and\nneut
rino-deuteron scattering (SNO experiment). MuSun is the part of the system
atic\nprogram to achieve a new level of precision in confronting the theori
es of weak\ninteractions\, QCD and few body physics\, and inherits some of
the well developed\ntechniques and apparatus from successful MuCap measurem
ent of the rate for muon\ncapture on the proton. We are using the muon bea
mline supplied from Paul Sherrer\nInstitute\, and our target is the cryogen
ic time projection chamber (TPC) filled with\nthe deuterium gas at 30K\, to
optimize the molecular kinetics. Progress of the\nhardware improvement and
data analysis for high statistics run in 2013 will be\npresented.\n\n![Xia
