SUMMARY:Shortcuts to adiabaticity across a phase transition
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Prof. Aldofo del Campo\, University of Massachusetts\
, Boston\nHosted by: Michael Kolodrubetz\n\nPart of the Condensed Matter Th
eory Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract:\nIn the course of a non-equilibrium conti
nuous phase transition\, the dynamics ceases to be adiabatic in the vicinit
y of the critical point as a result of the critical slowing down (the diver
gence of the relaxation time in the neighborhood of the critical point). Th
is enforces a local choice of the broken symmetry and can lead to the forma
tion of excitations\, including topological defects. Recently\, a variety o
f techniques known as shortcuts to adiabaticity has been introduced to desi
gn driving protocols that mimic adiabatic dynamics\, e.g.\, in the preparat
ion of a target state. We shall explore the use of shortcuts to adiabaticit
y to tailor the dynamics across a critical point and suppress defect format
	ion.
