SUMMARY:Determining the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy with Matter Effects
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Christopher Kachulis\n\nPart of the Preliminary Oral
	Exam.\n\nExamining Committee: Edward Kearns\, Robert Carey\, Emanuel Katz\,
Pankaj Mehta\n\nAbstract: Determining the neutrino mass hierarchy is one o
f the next\nbig steps for neutrino physics. One of the most promising tech
niques\nfor making this measurement is to take advantage of matter effects
in\neither atmospheric or accelerator neutrinos passing through the Earth.\
nI will discuss this technique\, and the first work on this measurement\nby
Super Kamiokande (SK) with atmospheric neutrinos\, and T2K and NOvA\nwith
accelerator neutrinos. I will also discuss studies of\nsensitivity to matt
er effects in SK's atmospheric neutrino sample.\n\n![Kachulis](/resources/e
