SUMMARY:From the CMB to fundamental physics - A closer look at n_s and r
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Raphael Flauger\, Carnegie Mellon University\n\nPart
of the HET Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract:\nThe cosmic microwave background co
ntains a wealth of information about\ncosmology as well as high energy phys
ics. It tells us about the\ncomposition and geometry of the universe\, the
properties of neutrinos\,\ndark matter\, and even about the conditions in o
ur universe long before\nthe cosmic microwave background was emitted. After
a brief review of\nwhat we may hope to learn from it about inflation\, I w
ill review\nmeasurements of the angular power spectrum of temperature\npert
urbations from Planck data by the Planck collaboration and by\nRenee Hlozek
\, David Spergel and myself. I will then combine these\nmeasurements with t
he recent measurement of the polarization of the\ncosmic microwave backgrou
nd by BICEP2 as well as the measurements of\npolarized emission from dust b
y the Planck collaboration to derive the\ncurrent constraints on the spectr
al index of scalar perturbations and\nthe amount of primordial gravitationa
l waves. I will show that the\ndata now disfavors the simplest model of inf
lation at 2-3 sigma\ndepending on the choice of likelihood for the temperat
	ure data.
