SUMMARY:1D Valence Bond Solids in a Magnetic Field
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Adam Iaizzi\n\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exam.\n\n
Examining Committee: Anders Sandvik\, Claudio Chamon\, James Miller\, Shya
msunder Erramilli\n\nAbstract:\n\nValence bond solids (VBS) are a kind of l
ong-range nonmagnetic order that can appear in certain quantum spin systems
. This order breaks a discrete symmetry\, so it is allowed to occur in one
dimension. Recent innovations in models and simulation techniques have enab
led large-scale numerical studies of the quantum phase transition from a po
wer-law quasi-Neel-ordered state to the VBS-ordered state. These studies ha
ve found evidence for the fractionalization of triplons into deconfined or
nearly-deconfined spinons at the phase boundary. We propose studying the de
struction of the VBS order by a magnetic field. I am currently developing s
tochastic series expansion quantum monte carlo simulations for this study.
As a parallel project\, we will be investigating the VBS under hole doping\
