SUMMARY:Emergence of Orbital Chirality in Multi-orbital Surface Bands
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Jung Hoon Han\, Sungkyunkwan University\nHosted by: C
laudio Chamon\n\nPart of the Condensed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nAbs
tract: A common wisdom in surface science is that the inversion \nsymmetry
breaking (ISB) at the surface is the origin\, together with the \nspin-orb
it effect\, of the celebrated Rashba effect on the surface \nelectronic str
ucture. In this talk I will argue that a generic \nconsequence of ISB in mu
lti-orbital bands (such as generated by \nt_{2g}-orbitals or p-orbitals)\,
even in the absence of any spin-orbit \ncoupling\, is the emergence of "orb
ital chirality". While similar to spin \nchirality due to the Rashba effect
	\, the proposed orbital chirality \nsplitting occurs in +1\, 0\, -1 orbital
angular momentum (OAM) sectors. \nThe new effect is dubbed the orbital Ras
hba effect. Circular dichroism \n(CD) ARPES is shown to be an effective pro
be of the orbital chirality in \nthe band structure\, and I will present re
cent demonstrations of this in \nsimple surface bands of Cu and Ag. The mor
e challenging case of strongly \nspin-orbit-coupled bands of Bi2Se3 surface
will be briefly mentioned\, \nalong with several conflicting interpretatio
ns surrounding the same sort \nof CD-ARPES measurements.\nAs applications o
f this idea I will talk about possible p-wave-type \nKondo pairing in ultra
thin Kondo lattice material\, orbital analogue of\nDzyaloshinskii-Moriya in
teraction in the Mott limit\, and possible \nrelevance in spin-transfer tor
que measured in ultrathin magnetic films. \nTime permitting\, I will discus
s ongoing investigation of the orbital \nchirality structure in the surface
	 bands of SrTiO3.
