SUMMARY:Statistical Physics Approach to Financial Networks
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Adam Avakian\n\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exam.\n\
	nExamining Committee:\n\nH. Eugene Stanley \nTulika Bose\nWilliam Skocpol\n
Plamen Ch. Ivanov\n\nAbstract: Interconnectedness in bank networks can be t
hought to\nbe both good and bad. On the one hand\, more connections means m
ore\npathways through which failure can spread. On the other hand\, more\nc
onnections also means a sharing of the financial burden when one node\nfail
	s. We propose a model in which the largest 2000 firms in the world\nreprese
nt the nodes of a bank network linked by credit\nexposure. Using Monte Carl
o methods\, we find that the more links among\nthe network of firms\, the g
reater the risk of failure across the network\,\nresulting in economic disa
ster. We also propose potential controls on the\nmodel\, akin to financial
regulations\, which could lower the risk of\nsystemwide failure.\n\n![Adam]
