SUMMARY:A Search for new Heavy Gauge Bosons Decaying to a Lepton Plus Missi
ng Transverse Energy Using pp Collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV in the ATLAS De
	tector
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Brian Alex Long\n\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exam.
	\n\nExamining Committee: John Butler\, Kevin Black\, Tulika Bose\, Kenneth
Lane\, Pankaj Mehta\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe Large Hadron Collider (LHC) al
lows one to create states of matter\nthat may have only existed for a few m
oments after the big bang. The\ndirect observation of these previously uns
een phenomena would bring us\none step closer toward understanding the univ
erse. One kind of\nparticle that could in principle be observed at the LHC
is a more\nmassive cousin of the Standard Model (SM) charged electroweak g
auge\nboson\, the W. There are many models of beyond the Standard Model\np
hysics that predict this kind of particle. The simplest version\npredicts
a particle called the W' which possesses the same couplings\nas that of the
SM W. The ATLAS detector is designed to be able\ndistinguish even rare occ
urrences of such a particle\, given some final\nstate\, within the enormous
	 number of proton-proton collisions produced\nat the LHC. In my talk\, I w
ill discuss the current status of the\nsearch within ATLAS for a W' after i
t decays into a charged lepton and\na corresponding neutrino using the full
2012 dataset of sqrt(s) = 8\nTeV pp collisions at the LHC.
