SUMMARY:High Energy X-ray Diffraction Microscopy: Direct Observation of 3D 
	Materials Responses

	bstract:\nSpatially resolved diffraction of high energy (> 50 keV) monochro
	matic\nx-rays is used to non-destructively map microstructure inside of bul
	k\npolycrystalline materials. Tracking of structural responses to thermal\n
	and mechanical processes allows direct comparisons to computational\nmodels
	; such comparisons have not previously been possible because\nspatially res
	olved measurements inside of bulk materials have not been\npossible. Our me
	asurements take advantage of the unique properties of\nx-ray beams availabl
	e at the 1-ID high energy beamline at the Advanced\nPhoton Source\, Argonne
	 National Laboratory; facilities have also been\ndeveloped at other high en
	ergy\, third generation synchrotrons.\nMeasurements spanning volumes of the
	 order of a cubic millimeter with\nmicron scale resolution generate large\,
	 statistically significant data\nsets. We use a computationally intensive m
	ethod to reconstruct the\ncrystal lattice orientation field. Using repeated
	 measurements of the\nsame material volume allows the extraction of trends 
	in the response\nbehavior: grain boundary motions\, grain rotations\, and i
	ntra-granular\ndefect accumulation. In this seminar I will outline the meas
	urement\nand reconstruction methods and give example applications.\nThree-d
	imensional anisotropic ordering and coarsening induced by\nannealing are fo
	llowed in pure aluminum and pure nickel samples.\nTwinning transformations 
	and lattice rotations are followed in\nhexagonal zirconium as it undergoes 
	tensile extension. Finally\,\non-going developments in the measurement and 
	analysis methods will be\nsummarized.
