SUMMARY:Proximity Effects and Metallic States in Mesoscopic Superconductor-
	Normal Metal-Superconductor Arrays
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Nadya Mason\, University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champai
gn\nHosted by: David Campbell\n\nPart of the Condensed Matter Theory Semina
r Series.\n\nAbstract:\nIn this talk\, I will discuss our experiments on ar
rays of superconducting islands patterned on normal metal films. The underl
ying normal metal can become superconducting due to the proximity effect; t
hus\, by changing the size and spacing of the superconducting islands\, we
can controllably change the superconducting properties of the metal film. S
uch systems are also predicted to exhibit 2D zero-temperature metallic stat
es\, which cannot be explained by conventional transport theory. I will dis
cuss electrical transport measurements of these systems\, including charact
erization of the superconducting transitions\, vortex dynamics in a finite
magnetic-field\, and evidence that the system approaches unusual metallic g
round states as the island spacing is increased.
