Physics Department

at Boston University


The Department of Physics at Boston University is located in the Metcalf Science Center and the Physics Research Building at the Charles River Campus of the University. This facility houses state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories, lecture and seminar rooms, machine and electronics shops, student lounges, and a cafeteria. Facilities in high energy physics, astrophysics, condensed matter, biophysics and novel materials research include laboratories with high bay assembly areas, CAD/CAM systems, a scanning electron microscope, an array of powerful computers and workstations, electronic design facilities and a modern machine shop dedicated to the design and construction of scientific instruments. A total of 60 full time and visiting faculty members are currently engaged in research covering an unusually broad range of theoretical and experimental topics.
The picture:
Explosion, a 1987 metal sculpture by Sergio Castillo is the fronstispiece of the Physics Department and a gift of Trustee Chairman Arthur Metcalf comissioned for the Center which bears his name. A award winning Boston artist Castillo with several public works displayed on the BU campus, was inspired in this piece by descriptions of high energy particle collisions.
